What’s this all about?
“Rett Ride Across America” is a 2600 mile cycling ride from California to Florida during the month of October, 2018. My good friend KC Byers is the creator of this event, and the man who will make the entire journey. Others like myslef will join him for one or more daily “legs” along the way. I’ll be riding with him for 2-3 days from San Antonio to Houston.
Why are we doing this?
To raise awareness and money for continued research.
What is Rett Syndrome?
Rett syndrome is a rare neurological disorder which becomes apparent in infancy or early childhood. It occurs in 1 in 10,000 births and primarily affects females. The children develop normally for the first 6 to18 months and then begin to regress – or lose acquired skills. Rett syndrome causes changes in the brain that lead to lifelong impairments, including inability to speak, seizures, scoliosis and breathing difficulties. More than half of those affected lose the ability to walk. Most require maximum assistance with basic daily activities.
WHAT CAN YOU DO TO HELP???
Just taking a moment out of your day to learn about Rett Syndrome and what we’re up to here is a huge start. Thank you. You can make a donation here to help with my personal fundraising goal (the reason I’m training and riding in this event).
You can make a direct donation (rettsyndrome.org).
You could let others know about Rett, this event, and that I'm riding.
Better still, you could dust off the ol’ road bike, train your heart out for the next two months, and join KC and I for a leg or two of the ride.
***Go to rettrideacrossamerica.com and click “RIDE” ASAP to register***
Money raised will be used by rettsyndrome.org to continue research of effective treatments, support families, and ultimately find a cure (the gene has been identified – MECP2 – and studies in mice show promise).
The cause, KC and his daughter, and the thousands of children who have (or will have) this disease until a cure is found is important to me.
Please join us in the ride or make a donation of absolutely any size here in support of our efforts.
